Tooth Extractions

Removing Teeth to Protect Your Smile

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Tooth extraction may be recommended for several reasons, including advanced periodontal disease, severe tooth decay, irreparable damage, failed root canal treatment, poorly positioned teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, or as part of a pre-orthodontic plan. After extraction, it’s important to replace the missing tooth to prevent shifting and other dental complications. A dental implant is often a highly effective solution for restoring both function and appearance.

Important Information About Tooth Extractions

Many people feel anxious about having a tooth extracted, but thanks to modern dental techniques and technology, the procedure is now more comfortable and recovery times are faster. While it’s normal to experience some jaw or mouth discomfort for a day or two, removing a problematic tooth often brings significant relief.

If you're planning to have a tooth extracted, here are some key points to remember:

  • Recovery Guidelines: Avoid eating for at least three hours after the procedure, and refrain from smoking for at least 24 hours, as nicotine can delay healing. Stick to cold drinks and soft foods on the first night, and wait a few days before brushing near the extraction site.
  • Infection Awareness: Like any open wound, there's a risk of infection. If bleeding continues for more than three days, contact your dentist. Should an infection occur, a short course of antibiotics is usually enough to resolve it.
