Functional Emergency Denture in 2 Hours

Emergency broken denture to Orange County best dentist sunrise dental center
Broken denture, big fracture on large portion, barely hanging in place.
Denture cannot be repaired.

Over the weekend we received an emergency call from an out of town patient who suffered a very bad fall on the face. Unfortunately the patients denture broke into 2 pieces with a large fracture over the main piece. Repair was not possible as the denture was essentially broken into 3 pieces.

Within just a few hours we managed to replicate a working denture for the patient while they went to the hospital for the injuries. By the time the patient returned we had finished making a new temporary denture. The patient was so happy to have a functional denture despite the injuries.

We understand our patients needs and how important their teeth is to their overall appearance and well-being. This patient chose to come to us even before going to the Emergency Room for the injuries. The patient informed us that having the denture fixed is the absolute most important thing. We understand that. We told the patient not to worry, go get the injuries taken care of and a new set of dentures will be waiting here upon their return.

This is now counts as the 3rd full & immediate fabrication and replacement of dentures we have done at Sunrise Dental Center. These cases demonstrate our Doctor's and Staff's level of skill and patience, as well as our dedication to our patients, in staying behind to wait for their return from the emergency room.

Our Doctors and Dental Assistant stayed after hours on Saturday to finish this case for the patient, who though left bruised from the fall, ended up happy that they won't be without a smile even for a day.

Three Ways to Whiten Teeth

1. Professional Bleaching

Professional bleaching is done by a professional at a dental office. It requires an appointment and often will require multiple appointments to complete the process. Each appointment can last from 30-90 minutes. Bleaching is usually done by laser treatment where a bleaching gel is applied onto the teeth, then the laser activates the gel. The cost for properly done Professional Bleaching is anywhere between $500 to $1000.

2. Store-bought Kit

At the store, you can find many types of kits. The following are some of the types you will see in a store:

  • Strips: A strip for your mouth coated in a bleaching agent, that is applied to the teeth and left on for normally 30 minutes. Strips need to be applied every day until your desired shade is reached, which is usually around 14 days. Strips tend to be anywhere from $30-$60.
  • Gels: These typically come in a bottle and brushed onto the teeth with an applicator. Unlike the strips, there is no plastic strip covering the gel, but works similar to the strip. Gels tend to be the cheapest, starting around $10.
  • Trays: Trays tend to be considered the most effective in-home option. The bleaching agent is injected into the tray and then the tray is placed over the teeth. These typically stay on for 15-20 minutes. This procedure is normally repeated one or two more times to achieve the results. Trays tend to be the priciest, ranging from $80 to $300.

3. DIY Remedies

DIY remedies do not work nearly as well as store-bought or professional treatment. But most importantly are easily misused and results in damage to your oral health. Some home products that are used for this purpose includes, baking soda, lemon and etc. But again, these are easily misused and end up damaging the tooth enamel, whilst achieving weak results at best.

Whitening toothpate is another home remedy solution. While these do work over many weeks, whitening toothpaste is more abrasive than regular toothpaste, which helps whiten but also may damage the tooth enamal, causing worse problems down the road. If using a whitening toothpaste, make sure it has the ADA Seal of Approval and follow the instructions carefully.

Teeth whitening is a wonderful way to improve your smile and overall appearance. However, many home remedies and store-bought products are often misused and end up damaging your oral health instead. Regardless of which option you choose to go with, make sure to check first with your dentist about the pros and cons of each, as well as the safety of your pearly whites.

What to do in Dental Emergency?

Emergency dentist orange countyDo you know what to do in a dental emergency?

As far as it may be from your mind, when a dental emergency strikes, some basic knowledge can mean the difference from saving your own tooth and financial expense to having to deal with elevated pain and treatment costs.

Sunrise Dental Center has put together an FAQ and some Quick Tips to help you be able to identify and react quickly in the case of most dental emergencies.

Quick Immediate Tips for Dental Emergencies

  • Gently rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Do not apply aspirin to the area, as it may burn your gum tissue.
  • Cap a lost filling using a piece of sugarless gum.
  • If your tooth got knocked out, hold the tooth only by the crown (chewing edge) and keep it moist at all times with milk (or water if no milk is available). Having it treated within 1 hour is your best chance of recovering this tooth.
  • Gently apply gauze to stop any bleeding.
  • Apply cold compresses to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling and pain.
  • For pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil.  Do not exceed recommended doses.

Our Dental Emergencies FAQ

Accidents can happen, and when they do, some basic knowledge could mean the difference between saving or losing your tooth. Our Dental Emergencies FAQ will go over some of the common mishaps. But ALL emergencies dictate you should see a dentist as soon as possible. If the case is very severe and you are unable to locate a dentist, consider visiting your local emergency room.

Q: How do I treat a toothache?
A:
This is a very common dental emergency. A toothache is often a sign of infection in or around the tooth. Rinse out your mouth with warm water to clean. You can floss gently to remove any food that might be caught between your teeth. Do not put aspirin on your aching tooth or gums as it may damage the gum tissue. If the pain continues, contact your dentist right away.

Q: What should I do if my tooth got knocked out?
A:
For knocked-out tooth is a permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times and hold it only by the crown (chewing edge). Do not attempt to clean the tooth, for risk of further damage. If possible, try placing the tooth back into the socket without touching the root. Bite down gently on gauze or a wet tea bag to help keep it in place. Be careful not to swallow the tooth. Otherwise, place it in between your cheek and gums, in milk (or water if milk is not available), or use a tooth preservation product with the ADA Seal. Or try to place the tooth in a container and cover with a small amount of whole milk or saliva. Then get your and your tooth to your dentist as soon as possible. The best chance of successfully saving the tooth is to be seen within 1 hour. For the future, consider purchasing a tooth-saving storage device (Save-a-Tooth, EMT Tooth Saver) that may be available at your dentist's office. Such a kit contains a travel case and fluid solution and is a good piece to keep in your home first-aid kit.

If your tooth is badly broken, your nerve endings may be exposed. You will need immediate dental help to avoid infection and pain.

Do germs live on my toothbrush?

toothbrush orange county dentistAnd the answer is... Yes!

With a severe flu season all around the country this year, even a few of our friends have been hit with the horrible bug. Just as we've been telling our friends, we want to remind our patients as well... that after you have recovered from your cold, one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is by replacing your toothbrush.

In general, to practice good toothbrush hygiene make sure you:

1. Wash you hands before and after each brushing
2. Make sure your toothbrush is always airing dry after each use
3. Replace it at regular intervals (3-4 months)
